I AM WOMAN,

starring Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Evan Peters and Danielle Macdonald, to World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival

I AM WOMAN, the major new Australian feature film which tells the story of Australian singing superstar Helen Reddy, will have its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

The film has been selected to open the Festival’s prestigious Special Presentation section.

Two of Australia’s most exciting young international stars, Tilda Cobham-Hervey (Hotel Mumbai) and Danielle Macdonald (PattiCake$), headline the film. Tilda plays Helen Reddy in a magnetic performance that will establish her as a major star; with Danielle Macdonald as her friend, the legendary Australian rock journalist Lillian Roxon.  Evan Peters (American Horror Story, X-Men, American Animals) also stars as Helen’s mercurial husband and manager, Jeff Wald.

I AM WOMAN was filmed in Sydney and Los Angeles, and is the dramatic feature directorial debut of LA-based Australian director Unjoo Moon (The Zen of Bennett). The cinematographer is Academy-Award-winner Dion Beebe (Memoirs of A Geisha, Chicago).  Producer is Goalpost Pictures’ Rosemary Blight (Top End Wedding, The Sapphires). Transmission will distribute the film in Australia and New Zealand.

I AM WOMAN is the story of Helen Reddy who, in 1966, landed in New York with her three-year-old daughter, a suitcase and $230 in her pocket. Within weeks she was broke. Five years later she was one of the biggest superstars of her time, the first ever Australian to win a Grammy for best Pop Vocal Performance and an icon of the 1970’s feminist movement. Helen wrote the anthem, ‘I Am Woman’, which galvanised a generation of women to fight for change.

Producer Rosemary Blight said: “We couldn’t be happier. Toronto is an incredible festival to launch the film and honours the work of the entire cast and crew as well as the incomparable Helen Reddy, whose life story inspires us all.”

Director Unjoo Moon said: “It was always my dream to premiere I AM WOMAN at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival. I am so thrilled that TIFF have selected our film for a special presentation and I can’t wait for people to embrace Helen and fall in love with her all over again.”

Transmission Films’ Andrew Mackie said: "I AM WOMAN is a truly wonderful dramatic feature debut from Director Unjoo Moon. Featuring a stunning performance by Tilda Cobham-Hervey, TIFF audiences are in for a treat, as are Australians when it opens early 2020. We love this movie!"
